Job Opening: Occupancy Specialist
Reports to the Housing Choice Voucher Manager
The Harrisonburg Redevelopment and Housing Authority (HRHA) is seeking a qualified applicant for the position of Occupancy Specialist. This position is responsible for managing the housing choice voucher application processes and waiting lists.
The Occupancy Specialist is responsible for:
Responding to all applicant and other interested party inquires received in person, by phone, or mail by providing information about the housing assistance programs offered by HRHA.
Receiving and reviewing initial applications for assistance under Project-Based and Housing Choice Voucher programs.
Performing prescribed checks to verify family status and ensure the applicant’s individual and household incomes are within program limits.
Ensuring compliance with federal selection preference requirements and requesting missing data and clarification needed to complete and process the application.
Advising applicants regarding eligibility and placement on appropriate waiting lists, informing applicants of reasons for non-eligibility as well as the appeal process.
Recording applications and entering required data in the computer system.
Updating application data and files at prescribed times by contacting applicants and recording changes that might affect eligibility and housing requirements.
Updating and maintaining applicant waiting lists.
Advising Program Managers and Property Mangers of next eligible person on the appropriate waiting list.
Maintaining a caseload of clients receiving assistance through the Mainstream Voucher and the Family Unification programs.
Calculating initial rents as well as annual recertification and adjustments in accordance to relevant program requirements.
Conducting outreach through a variety of traditional and non-traditional activities to support mainstream and FUP voucher participants.
Qualifications:
At least two years’ experience working in a professional office environment interacting with the public.
Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite – Excel and Word
Some college or an associate’s degree preferred. Experience can be used in lieu of education.

Pay: $41,000.00 per year
