INSTRUCTIONS AND GENERAL INFORMATION

Instructions for Submitting Applications:

Complete and sign the HRHA application form or submit a copy of your VAHCDO scholarship application and letters of recommendation. Any attachment not requested will not be used in evaluating the application.

The following MUST be submitted with the application:

A copy of high school transcripts listing Grade Point Average (GPA) and Class Ranking – minimum 2.5 GPA, or if your school does not track GPA, a 900 SAT score or 17 ACT score.

Two SIGNED letters supporting the character, achievements, and potential for education and career advancement of the applicant. One of the letters MUST be from a school official (principal, counselor, teacher, etc.). The other letter must be from a minister, coach, employer, or any person with significant knowledge of the applicant.

General Information:

Applications and supporting documents must be received by April 28, 2024. Applications and documents may be dropped off at HRHA offices or scanned and emailed to a designated Scholarship Contact person.

Scholarship awards will be made to HRHA residents or voucher holders who have maintained their HRHA residence for six months prior to April 28, 2024. The scholarship amount is $500 per semester, up to $1,000 per year, and is renewable as long as requirements are met. All applicants must graduate from high school no later than June 30, 2024. Funds are to be used beginning with the Fall Semester 2024 school year.

Finalists and the grantees will be selected by a Scholarship Committee to be determined by HRHA. The scholarship selection committee will have five members and include: one HRHA Commissioner, one HRHA staff member, and three community representatives. Candidates will be ranked using a scoring and evaluation sheet as well as in person or remote interviews. Scholarship recipients will be notified by May 19, 2024.

Scholarship funds will be sent to the educational institution. Students must fill out HRHA’s Payment Request Form, informing HRHA of the school they are attending, their student id number, address funds should be sent to, student GPA, and declaring their commitment to maintaining full-time status. The recipient of the award must attend an accredited university, college, vocational, technical, or business school. Scholarship recipients will be required to forward a transcript at the end of each semester to a designated Scholarship Contact person. They must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA and be a full-time student.

If a scholarship recipient’s family moves out of public or assisted housing after the award has been made, the recipient shall be eligible to continue to receive multi-year funding provided other guidelines are met.
