The Garden Grove of Books- Reading Program

The Garden Grove of Books is HRHA’s first reading program. Through this program, we will empower the youth of Harrisonburg with better access and support to build basic literacy skills, expand their vocabulary, and strengthen their writing skills. There will be two primary age groups that will be served will be 3-11 year-olds and 11-17-year-olds. As they build their literacy skills throughout the program, they are also eligible to win prizes based on several different categories.

During the month of July and August, HRHA will be hosting a reading session that invites all program participants to read with the other children as well as an open reading session. These sessions will be taking place at the Kelley Street Garden (Click Here for GPS Directions to the Kelley Street Garden). Drinks and snacks will be provided during each reading session.Please monitor your email for updates regarding the reading program, including any cancellations due to rain. Please see the reading program schedule below. These sessions are a supplement to the reading at home.

July 10th and August 7^th– 3-11-year-old reading group from 3-4 pm

July 11^th and August 8^th– 11-17-year-old reading group from 3-4 pm

July 12^th and August 9^th– open reading sessions from 3-4 pm

Prizes for the Reading Program

For both age groups, see the available participation prizes! The reader will be able to pick a prize of their choosing up to a certain cash value.

$100 value prize for the participant who reads the most (in terms of pages)

$75 value prize for the best writing prompt response

$50 value prize for perfect attendance by attending the reading session for their age group and the open reading session ( That’s just four sessions!). The winner of this prize will be selected via raffle. Attendance will be tracked during each meeting.
